Nearly 200 years have passed since the man who would become known as Frederick Douglass was born. Over that span of time our society has witnessed a great deal of progress through its measure of humanity, in part, by recognizing that Americans of African descent are not beings of an inferior order (as stated in the Dred Scott ruling by the Missouri Supreme Court in 1857) and that they are due equal rights under the law like every American citizen as instructed by the U.S. Constitution.
Social evolution should not be celebrated by African Americans only but by all Americans. It’s the recognition of civil and human rights that have helped make us who we are. Perhaps the defense of those rights for others will help make us who we wish to become.
Slavery, as a state sanctioned institution, is securely in our past. It would be hard to imagine that it could ever be allowed to stand again in any modern country. As a business, however, slavery is alive and well in every corner of the globe. In fact, the illegal commerce of humans is one of the world’s most lucrative black market industries.
We formed the Frederick Douglass Family Foundation with a dual mission in mind: to honor the legacy of Frederick Douglass and to help raise awareness about all forms of modern-day slavery. Funds generated through the foundation will go toward this dual mission and will also support organizations that care for the victims of modern-day slavery.
We invite you to click through the site and learn a little about our unique lineage and how we arrived here today. At the same time, inform yourself about the crimes being committed against men, women and children every day throughout the world.
We hope you will respond to Frederick Douglass’ call to Agitate! and join our family in the fight against modern-day slavery.
