History has as many meanings as there are people to define it. History may mean everything or nothing. History may be forgotten or it can be a justification for war. History may be boring or it can be an obsession. History may be true and it will be embellished.
However you regard history, we hope you will consider the value of its ability to teach us about the present and the future. At the Frederick Douglass Family Foundation, we analyze some of the most painful chapters in history, those having to do with the institution of slavery, in order to help us better understand why slave labor still rots the framework of our contemporary economies. There is no reason, however, to believe that we can’t continue to evolve toward the highest ideals of men and women to agree in practice that “all men are created equal.”
