History, Human Rights and the Power of One

The Frederick Douglass Service-Learning Projects will address an insidious local, national and worldwidehuman rights problem by empowering students to educate the public with the support of their communityleaders and the guidance of history.

At Issue

Human trafficking is the buying and selling of people and it’s happening today all over the United States.  Experts believe that public education is the first step to ending it.

Service-Learning

A teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.

The Opportunity

Young people can reach the world through social networks and the Internet.  Give them a message and a mission… and they can change the world.  Give them history and they’ll understand why it’s important.  Students, through a variety service-learning projects, will undertake a public awareness campaign.

Partners

The descendants of Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington make natural leaders for an effort toeducate the public about modern forms of slavery.  Partners, however, are needed to put a local stampon such an effort. The curriculum for each service-learning project will be co-created by a local non-profit organization, agency or institution.  These partners have an investment in the community and, therefore, a vital interest in making these projects work.  In creating an Honorary Board of Directors, we hope to present an even higher level of support for the students.

Tracking and Accountability

Our other partner for these projects, Compassionworx, will provide online tracking of student activities.  This will allow us to constantly report and update the progress of student participation.  The individual service profiles they create will record their volunteer experiences in full and can be used by students as a part of their educational resumes.

Paying for the Program

The Frederick Douglass Family Foundation will be responsible for finding funds to manage these projects.  These service-learning projects will serve as a model for similar efforts across the country.
